The popularity of our making up service speak for itself! We no longer have quiet periods, though we do ask you please to try to avoid sending work in during January and August - in January we are recovering from the (inevitable) last-minute panics of December, and in August either we or our upholsterers are on holiday, recharging our batteries in preparation for the autumn/winter rush!

AUGUST 2008 - IMPORTANT NOTE! Jolly Red is on the move. We are moving to new premises in October, so cannot accept any making up for the rest of the year (November  & December) after the end of October 2008. It will just be too chaotic, and we cannot take the responsibility of returning work in time for Christmas.

Making up Prices August 2008

Our postage charges on heavy items have increased considerably in the last 12 months. Some of the larger cushions can cost up to £22.00 to return to customers, so for this reason we will from now on send your  tapestry (the precious, most important part) back to you by Special Delivery and the cushion pad (not so valuable) by standard recorded post if the combined weight puts the postage charge at an unreasonable level. We only ever allowed £5.00 for the postage, and the cost of sending back even a teacosy is £6.90.

We've not changed the prices of the children's designs because we want to encourage the next generation of stitchers, and the horrendous postage increases apply largely to items over 1kg in weight.

It might help to remember that some shops and other tapestry companies charge £30 for the canvas stretching alone ...

Standard Making Up - Cushions

This service includes stretching your finished canvas (whatever shape it's in - none has ever defeated us!), supply of fabric, and making up with piping and a concealed zip in the back of the cushion. Your finished cushion is returned to you by registered post.

Please contact us by telephone or email if you would like to see fabric samples, as there are too many to show on the website. Don't forget to mention the name/description of the design so we know which colours to send.

Mitred Edges

Sometimes a cushion can benefit from having an extra border around the design. Please specify the width of border you need if you'd like a mitred edging - enclose a diagram if it's complicated!

Teacosies

We stretch the canvas, and make up with a fabric border around the outer edge of the teacosy, and along the lower edge. They also have a hanging loop, and wadding between the fabric layers. Customers usually choose a checked outer fabric with contrast plain fabric on the inside.

Stockings

The stockings are made with a fabric border and hanging loop, contrast lining, with a layer of wadding in between. Choose from the following options, don't forget to put a note in with your Stocking to let us know how you'd like yours to be made up!

Below is a list of the most popular colours, but we have also made stockings up in lilac/purple/pink combinations, so do give us a call if you're looking for a colour that isn't on the list.

Why do we charge extra for making up non-Jolly Red designs?

We need to charge extra for a multitude of reasons!! Here are a few that come to mind:

1. We often have to order in extra fabrics in different colours to match up with designs that are not in our range. However small the design, we need to order in at least 2m...then we need to get zips to match, which we have to buy in 3s. (it becomes extremely expensive).

2. We know that department stores charge at least double our prices for making up, with many insisting that you also provide your own fabric. Supply of fabric is included in our prices.

3. Varying quality of some of the non-Jolly Red canvas, some of which is so poor that it takes at least two attempts to even stretch the canvas adequately before it can be made up.

4. The colours sometimes run on non-Jolly Red canvases. We are amazed that some companies use printers who do not correctly finish their canvases so that the colours are fast, but they do. We are experienced at spotting such canvases and always carry out a fastness test before dampening the whole canvas.

5. Our making up service is just so busy! Sometimes we can only just cope with the number of Jolly Red designs and find it incredibly hard to squeeze in any others.
