Making Up Service > About Our Service
Thank you for visiting Jolly Red's tapestry making up service. If zips and piping scare you, you've come to the right place! Images of recent making up can be seen in our Customer Gallery', in the drop down menu of our Making Up Service page, as well as on our blog at www.jollyredstitches.blogspot.com. In the gallery and on on the blog we are able to show examples of lovely mitred edges, different combinations of border colours - there are lots of ideas if you're looking for inspiration for your finished needlepoint.
We make up Jolly Red designs and plenty of non-Jolly Red ones too, in fact Ehrman's Klimt-inspired designs are greeted as old friends in our workshop! I can't recall a week when we haven't had at least a couple of Klimt tapestries in the workshop, so you can rest assured that we have a good range of fabrics to suit the designs - the most requested are goldy and terracotta shades. If you have a stash of tapestries lurking in your cupboard why not send one or two of them in to us for making up and you'll be able to proudly display your work, much more satisfying than having it hidden away.
We have recently started creating some albums on Facebook, showing different options for making up various cushions and Christmas Stockings. If Facebook is your sort of thing, please click the blue Facebook button at the top right of this page (don't forget to like our page if you are feeling kind - thank you!) and then get stuck in to the albums in our photos area. Now that we're getting the hang of it, we'll keep adding more pictures.
The prices below apply to all designs - both Jolly Red and non-Jolly Red. If you send in a non-Jolly Red design and we have queries or concerns we will call or email you before starting work on your tapestry.
Our standard cushion making up prices set out below include the stretching of your canvas, supply of fabric for making up, making up with piping and concealed zip, a top quality feather pad, and return delivery of finished tapestry to UK address by Special Delivery, or by Interlink Express (trackable, next day service). Before packing your work up, click on the drop down menu on the Making Up Service box and take a quick look at our Checklist to make sure you've included all the details we'll need to get your work speeding its way back to you. Incidentally, you don't need to buy an expensive cardboard tube for your tapestry - a jiffy bag is fine, or even a carrier bag wrapped in brown paper!
Please allow up to 5 weeks for your work to be returned, though we usually much faster than this! Our average time for returning making up during the warmer summer months is approximately three weeks. Give us a call if you are working to a deadline, we'll do our utmost to meet it.
If you prefer, you can drop your work in to us at our workshop. We welcome visitors, but please do call in advance to let us know which day you plan to come in. Sometimes, especially if we are packing large orders, it is a bit hectic with all of our work tops covered in wool, canvas, red bags and paperwork. With a bit of warning we can always make space!
MAKING UP DEADLINE FOR ALL WORK NEEDED BY CHRISTMAS IN ANY YEAR IS 1st November
Cushions
Larger Cushions
This popular service for your tapestries includes stretching your finished canvas (whatever shape it's in - none has ever defeated us!), supply of fabric, and making up with piping and a concealed zip in the back of the cushion. We also provide a feather pad with your completed cushion.
What Fabric Do You Use?
We use three ranges of fabric:
1. Our most widely used range is a wool blend range which works extremely well with most cushions as the weave of the fabric really goes with the tapestry stitch on the front. It's a lovely, cosy range of fabrics with a good choice of colours.
2. A cotton range, which has a more delicate feel. This range is useful for smaller projects requiring a mitred border, where the wool blend fabric might seem a bit heavy. Also popular for designs in paler colours. This range is also used for the backing of Jolly Red Christmas Stockings and for making up the kits in our Starter range into cushions (see below).
3. A cotton velvet range. We tend only to order in stronger colours as these are the ones that will work best with the colours in Jolly Red's designs. We have to order 2-5m of each fabric, and can't order in for instance a pale pink, knowing full well that it will sit on our shelves forever! The colours we have are: reds, purple, magenta, a few greens, a cranberry colour and some blues.
Smaller Cushions, Including Starter Kits
The kits in Jolly Red's starter range tend to be made up using our cotton fabrics, with customers typically asking for a 3" border around the design to make a nice sized cushion.
You can have some fun with the making up, and choose to have one colour for the border and backing, and a different colour for the piping.
Let us know if you need samples, and as always call us if you are unsure and need to discuss your making up.

Mitred Edges
Sometimes a tapestry cushion can benefit from having an extra border around the design. Please specify the width of border you need if you'd like a mitred edging - enclose a diagram if it's complicated. The more detailed the information is that you can give us, the quicker we will be with your making up.
A mitred edge is a good idea if:
a) the border of your design is quite 'busy' and you don't want to have a sense of it disappearing into the piping.
b) the finished tapestry is quite small, eg 'Congratulations Cushion.' On a design like this, a mitred border isn't strictly necessary but it helps to frame the design and make it more of a practical, useful size.
If unsure, give us a call on 01460 281111 to discuss before sending your work in. We can advise on colours, and width of borders based on our experience, but are always open to new ideas and colour combinations so don't feel you have to go along with our suggestions!
Christmas Stockings
Please get your Christmas tapestries to us by the end of October at the latest!!
After all your hard work stitching your tapestry stocking, it is often a good idea to have it professionally made up particularly if you don't feel too confident about making it up yourself. Here at Jolly Red we make up Christmas stockings with a fabric border and hanging loop in a soft cotton, lining fabric in a contrast colour (or a close colour if you prefer), with a layer of wadding in between the layers. Choose from the options below - and don't forget to put a note in with your stocking to let us know how your colour choices, it helps us to get your stocking back to you more quickly! We do occasionally get requests for velvet for the stockings, and although our velvet colours are limited they do tend to be in the 'jewel' colours, so are very good for stockings. Give us a call if you need to check which fabric option is the best for you, it's great if we can answer any questions early on and means that your stocking gets back to you nice and quickly.
The most popular backing/border/loop colours (cotton) are the traditional ones: dark red, navy or botle green, but we have also made stockings up in other combinations such as lilac/purple/pink, so do give us a call if you're looking for a colour that isn't a traditional one.
Velvet backing/border/loop colours: Dark red, bright red, prussian blue, bottle green, purple.
Lining colours, choose from: navy blue, royal blue, bottle green, dark green, red (please note we can't always guarantee a bright red but let us know if that is your preference), purple, mid blue, purple, heather... there are lots!
Stocking Making Up Price 2011: £52.00, includes all materials, stretching and return to a UK address.
Please do include a note of your colour choice/s when sending in your work. It's a good idea to sort out the details in advance, and it means that we will be quicker with your work!
If unsure, call 01460 281111 to discuss colours before sending in your stocking.
